PlasTrek 2019 for plastic awareness has commenced! We started off today on a somewhat slow start. Thought we would have been on the beach no later than 8:30am but we didn't set foot to beach til an hour later. We missed our chance to meet the mayor of Fernandina as he was waiting about an hours walk down the beach. We re-arranged to meet tomorrow on Talbot Island. Hopefully we can get a journalist out there tomorrow to talk plastic with us. During our day we were pleasantly surprised to find slim pickings of plastic. After talking with a local Tim AKA "Walker" and passing by smiling faces we assumed that the tight community has pride about their beaches and keep them clean. Although we definitely encountered a few Oceanic Plastic Discharges. Especially as the tide started pushing in and we got farther south on the island. The most exciting part of the day was definitely getting to safety just before this storm let open on the island. We saw the storm and anticipated one earlier before we trekked. Our preparations at the truck were perfect, but we just didn't know where exactly we would find ourselves before the storm. We walked until the lightning was in an alarmingly close distance and and the wind turned ice cold. We took a chance and ran up a boardwalk over the dune into the garage of a condominium. The sky seemed to gush just as we got to shelter. Close call! After wa waiting out the storm for approx 1 hour we made it to the end of the island approx 6:00 PM. "Walker" met us there and gave us a ride back to FortClinch where we had left the vehicle for the day. Now to Talbot island!
